I Love Your Expression

Math Expressions Using 1, 2, 3, and 4

Only 4-thumb-4Here’s an exciting new resource for the SMART Board I’ve been working on called Are You Ready for Mathematics: Only 4.

This Smart Notebook activity challenges students to write mathematical expressions that equal a given number using only the digits 1, 2, 3, and 4.

Most of the numbers presented to the students have multiple solutions, and all the question pages provide the option of displaying a Hint to help students formulate an answer.

For example, if the given number is 20, then students could write the expression:

(4)(1)(3 + 2)

This is a great beginning-of-the-year activity for an Algebra I class and a perfect resource for reviewing advanced order of operation.

The activity is very easy to use and even includes an Index page to make it easy to jump directly to any question page.

link-to-tool-functionThe file was created in Notebook 15 and utilizes a new feature which allows you to touch on a page object to change to the Pen Tool, the Erase Tool, or the Selection Tool. This is perfect for Full Screen Mode since it allows users to switch between tools without using the Toolbar.

I hope you’ll share this resource with your Middle and/or High School Math teachers in your school!
