Having Fun with Base 10 on the Pugsley Express

pugley-express-base10-thumbI just finished creating a new Notebook activity called “Pugsley Express – Base 10” to help early primary students understand and reinforce counting by 10’s and 1’s.

The file has three sections starting with a story problem that asks students to count how many dog bones are on a train. Teachers can use these pages to develop student understanding of the problem. The last two pages of this section highlight two strategies of solving the problem: 1) adding all the bones together, and 2) adding the 10’s and then adding the 1’s.

The next section takes students through three scenarios of counting by 10’s and 1’s. Finally, the Build It” section provides a more challenging and engaging way to model and interact with blocks of 10 by having students add the correct number of train cars (blocks of 10) to the Pugsley Express.

It’s back-to-school time so this activity is free to download and share. I enjoyed making this activity so I hope you’ll leave a comment to let me know what you think.

Click the Download button to download the Smart Notebook file.

The file was created in SMART Notebook Version 15 for Windows. If you experience any difficulties using the activity, please leave a comment. Make sure you indicated what version of Notebook you’re using and what specific issues you’re having. I’ll try to resolve them right away.

Hello. First, I would like to say thank you for sharing your hard work. It is wonderful to be able to just download and go and for it to be free as well, amazing!
I tried your guess the colour sinking octopus game and Pugsley and I can’t get either of them to run properly. The guessing one the letters don’t show up (but I can hear the sounds), and the Pugsley game I can’t make the character talk or make the actions happen.
    I have Smart notebook 14.
Thanks for any help you can provide. Both activities are right up my teaching style alley 🙂
